Roosevelt Island Ruin: Adaptive Reuse into a Beer Garden & Brewery

This project reimagines the historic ruins of Roosevelt Island's former smallpox hospital—America’s only recognized national ruin—into a vibrant beer garden and brewery. Located in the heart of New York City, this design transforms a forgotten structure into a welcoming retreat, offering a space for relaxation, socialization, and cultural connection.

The adaptive reuse prioritizes preserving the historical essence of the ruin while introducing modern functionality. A central feature of the design is the integration of mass timber beams to structurally brace the existing walls, paired with a clear glazing roof that floods the space with natural light while maintaining the raw beauty of the ruin.

One half of the structure houses brewery silos, celebrating craft beer production, while the other half functions as a lively beer garden. Visitors can enjoy outdoor games like Jenga and cornhole, as well as performances on the designated stage, making the space dynamic and engaging.

The preservation strategy is sensitive to the ruin’s storied history. Damaged or missing stones are replaced with opaque glass blocks, sized to match the original material. This approach not only respects the past but also imbues the space with modernity, allowing natural light to flow through the structure and creating a delicate balance between old and new.

By revitalizing this historic site, the Roosevelt Island Beer Garden & Brewery offers a unique venue that pays homage to its origins while providing a fresh and inviting experience for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
